In my first post this year, I referenced some issues that I am undergoing. I think it is time that I let you all in on one of them.
In the wee hours of the morning of Saturday, December 20, 2014, my father went home to be with the Lord. I have referenced him in my posts before and if you have read them, you know how I felt about my father. You will also understand why it has taken me this long to address it in this public forum....but I will not make this post a tribute to my dad. He would not have wanted that. He would simply have wanted me to continue to blog and be an encouragement to myself and the Body of Christ. So here I go....
If my father's death taught me anything, it was the reiteration of the idea that God is sovereign. A few days before my dad's home-going service I mentioned this lesson to a group of people. God does not rule by committee and He certainly does not seek approval before He acts. For indeed, if God had even bothered to run His plan by me, I would not have consented to my father's death. I would have provided several reasons for him to remain alive longer. I would have cried, begged, and pleaded with God. And quite frankly, I would have been angry with Him if He did not act in accordance with my wishes.
But if God has to seek approval before He acts, then He is not God as we believe Him to be. You see, the amazing thing is that God's sovereignty is not tyrannical. Think about it, any human leader/head of government who did not seek counsel of advisers or even have advisers would automatically be considered a despot. But not Almighty God. God's actions and will, even when displeasing to us as humans, do not make Him any less God or any less good. He remains unchanged no matter what we might think. Indeed, the scripture tells us in Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV) that God's ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not ours. He, by virtue of his omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence, sees what we do not and indeed cannot. And He acts in our best interest for we know that all things work together for good to them that love of the Lord (Rom.8:28).
Here comes the inconvenient part...sometimes, it can be quite painful to submit to God's sovereignty, especially when He acts in a way that we do not understand or like. That is where faith steps in. In truth, if the God we say we serve is the God that we claim Him to be, then we ought to trust that His will is best.
Is there some situation in your life where God is acting and leading in one direction and you are not in agreement? Let the Word of God be your comfort. He does work all things together for your good. Our responsibility is to trust Him.
This is a hard-hitting but true message! It is much-needed for our time.
